How Much Do Travel Agents Make? 2025 Pay by Percentile, State, City and Industry
Key takeaways

  • The median annual wage for travel agents was $50,160 in May 2025 ($24.11 an hour), compared with $50,980 for all U.S. occupations.
  • The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $34,610; the top 10% earned more than $76,660.
  • BLS projects employment to change by 0.2% from 2025 to 2035, with about 5.9 thousand openings a year.

About 55,110 people worked as travel agents in the United States in May 2025, according to the federal government’s BLS OEWS national data, May 2025. Here is what they earn, from entry level to the top of the field, and where the pay is highest. Projections and training requirements come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Travel Agents and BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35.

The full pay range

Percentile Hourly Annual
10th (entry level / lowest paid) $16.64 $34,610
25th $20.17 $41,950
50th (median) $24.11 $50,160
75th $30.32 $63,060
90th (most experienced / best paid) $36.86 $76,660
Mean (average) $26.28 $54,660

A percentile wage means that share of workers earn less. For example, 25% of travel agents earned less than $41,950. BLS wage estimates do not include overtime, tips or most bonuses.

States where travel agents earn the most

Highest state medians in the May 2025 survey (state data):

State Median annual wage Employment
Nevada $63,400 not available
District of Columbia $61,560 160
Montana $61,330 200
New Jersey $61,090 1,660
Connecticut $60,640 650

At the other end, the lowest state medians were in South Carolina ($34,560), Louisiana ($35,970), Arkansas ($36,600). Lower-paying states often have lower living costs, so compare offers with local prices in mind.

Top-paying metro areas

Metro areas with at least 300 jobs in this occupation, ranked by median wage (metro data):

Metro area Median annual wage Employment
Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury, CT $62,870 320
Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH $58,890 1,490
Denver-Aurora-Centennial, CO $58,690 700
New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ $58,430 3,610
Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA $58,030 370

Which industries pay travel agents the most

Median wage by industry sector, for sectors with at least 1,000 jobs in the occupation (industry data):

Industry sector Median annual wage Employment
Management of Companies and Enterprises $63,400 2,690
Finance and Insurance $50,210 2,130
Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services $49,650 46,080

How to get into the field

  • Typical entry education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Work experience in a related occupation: none.
  • Typical on-the-job training: Moderate-term on-the-job training.

These are the typical requirements BLS assigns to the occupation in its BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35 tables; employers and state licensing boards may require more. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Travel Agents explains licensing and certification in detail.

Using these numbers to ask for a raise

  • Find your band. If you earn less than $41,950, you are in the bottom quarter nationally. If you have several years of experience, that is a fact worth raising in a pay review.
  • Use local data, not national. State and metro medians above can be far from the national $50,160. Quote the figure for your area.
  • Compare industries. If another sector pays your occupation more, that is useful leverage, or a sign it may be worth moving.
  • Count the whole package. These figures exclude overtime and benefits, so compare total compensation when weighing an offer.

One more data point: the metro area where travel agents are most concentrated is Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL, with a location quotient of 4.56 and 4,560 jobs at a median of $50,720. A location quotient above 1 means the job is a bigger share of local employment than it is nationally, which usually means more employers competing for experienced workers.
