Retail Career Pay Ladder: Cashier to Supervisor to Store Manager (BLS 2025)

Retail is one of the largest entry points into the workforce, and the federal data shows both the low starting pay and the size of the jump into supervision. Here is the ladder in May 2025 wages.
The pay ladder at a glance
| Occupation | U.S. jobs | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. | Typical entry education | Projected growth 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cashier | 3,089,410 | $24,530 | $32,880 | $40,410 | No formal educational credential | -6.5% |
| Retail salesperson | 3,897,860 | $27,210 | $35,410 | $47,890 | No formal educational credential | -0.3% |
| Retail supervisor | 1,121,800 | $33,120 | $48,520 | $77,080 | High school diploma or equivalent | -3.7% |
| General / operations manager | 3,503,020 | $50,090 | $105,770 | $253,390 | Bachelor's degree | +5.0% |
Wages are May 2025 estimates from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025; growth and education from BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35. The 10th and 90th percentiles show the range from entry-level or lower-paying employers to the most experienced or best-paid workers. For comparison, the median for all U.S. occupations was $50,980.
Cashier and sales associate
Cashiers earn a median of $32,880 and retail salespersons $35,410. Both are huge occupations (3,089,410 and 3,897,860 jobs), and BLS projects cashier employment to change by -6.5% from 2025 to 2035. Moving from register work to sales, where product knowledge matters, is the first small step up.
Into supervision
First-line supervisors of retail sales workers earn $48,520, about 37% more than retail salespersons. This is the biggest practical jump on the ladder because it requires no degree, just a track record of running shifts, training people and hitting numbers.
Beyond the store
General and operations managers earn a median of $105,770. This broad group includes store and district managers. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as typical for entry, though many retailers promote from within.
Where retail supervisors earn the most
State medians for first-line supervisors of retail sales workers vary widely. The five highest-paying states in the May 2025 survey:
| State | Median annual wage | Employment |
|---|---|---|
| Washington | $60,750 | 27,640 |
| Rhode Island | $58,570 | 3,880 |
| District of Columbia | $58,470 | 1,470 |
| New York | $58,300 | 50,830 |
| Colorado | $58,200 | 26,390 |
Pay tips for retail workers
- Ask about the key-holder or lead role. It is usually the stepping stone to a supervisor title.
- Check your state minimum. Many states and cities set minimum wages well above the federal $7.25.
- Watch salaried assistant-manager offers. If you mostly run a register or stock shelves, the job may not meet the duties test for overtime exemption.

On salaried retail manager jobs: to be exempt from overtime as an executive, an employee's primary duty must be managing the store or a department, they must regularly direct the work of at least two full-time employees (or the equivalent), they must be able to hire or fire (or have their recommendations given particular weight), and they must earn at least $684 a week on a salary basis.
