How Much Do Tutors Make? 2025 Pay by Percentile, State, City and Industry
Key takeaways

  • The median annual wage for tutors was $43,350 in May 2025 ($20.84 an hour), compared with $50,980 for all U.S. occupations.
  • The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $29,430; the top 10% earned more than $75,990.
  • BLS projects employment to change by -0.2% from 2025 to 2035, with about 34.2 thousand openings a year.

About 175,070 people worked as tutors in the United States in May 2025, according to the federal government’s BLS OEWS national data, May 2025. Here is what they earn, from entry level to the top of the field, and where the pay is highest. Projections and training requirements come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Tutors and BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35.

The full pay range

Percentile Hourly Annual
10th (entry level / lowest paid) $14.15 $29,430
25th $16.83 $35,000
50th (median) $20.84 $43,350
75th $26.38 $54,860
90th (most experienced / best paid) $36.53 $75,990
Mean (average) $23.10 $48,050

A percentile wage means that share of workers earn less. For example, 25% of tutors earned less than $35,000. BLS wage estimates do not include overtime, tips or most bonuses.

States where tutors earn the most

Highest state medians in the May 2025 survey (state data):

State Median annual wage Employment
Wyoming $82,290 200
Rhode Island $77,850 300
Massachusetts $60,900 4,610
Vermont $53,920 130
New Hampshire $53,790 700

At the other end, the lowest state medians were in Nevada ($30,420), Arkansas ($30,830), Missouri ($32,270). Lower-paying states often have lower living costs, so compare offers with local prices in mind.

Top-paying metro areas

Metro areas with at least 300 jobs in this occupation, ranked by median wage (metro data):

Metro area Median annual wage Employment
Providence-Warwick, RI-MA $67,910 420

Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN $62,950 1,370
Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD $56,200 2,470
New Haven, CT $54,550 400

Which industries pay tutors the most

Median wage by industry sector, for sectors with at least 1,000 jobs in the occupation (industry data):

Industry sector Median annual wage Employment
Educational Services $43,510 158,780
Health Care and Social Assistance $41,960 8,140
Government (federal, state and local; excludes public schools, public hospitals and the Postal Service) $40,420 1,150

How to get into the field

  • Typical entry education: Some college, no degree.
  • Work experience in a related occupation: none.
  • Typical on-the-job training: none.

These are the typical requirements BLS assigns to the occupation in its BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35 tables; employers and state licensing boards may require more. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Tutors explains licensing and certification in detail.

Using these numbers to ask for a raise

  • Find your band. If you earn less than $35,000, you are in the bottom quarter nationally. If you have several years of experience, that is a fact worth raising in a pay review.
  • Use local data, not national. State and metro medians above can be far from the national $43,350. Quote the figure for your area.
  • Compare industries. If another sector pays your occupation more, that is useful leverage, or a sign it may be worth moving.
  • Count the whole package. These figures exclude overtime and benefits, so compare total compensation when weighing an offer.

One more data point: the metro area where tutors are most concentrated is Ann Arbor, MI, with a location quotient of 7.38 and 1,820 jobs at a median of $37,380. A location quotient above 1 means the job is a bigger share of local employment than it is nationally, which usually means more employers competing for experienced workers.
