How to get into the field

  • Typical entry education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Work experience in a related occupation: none.
  • Typical on-the-job training: Long-term on-the-job training.

These are the typical requirements BLS assigns to the occupation in its BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35 tables; employers and state licensing boards may require more. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Except Engines explains licensing and certification in detail.

Using these numbers to ask for a raise

  • Find your band. If you earn less than $56,970, you are in the bottom quarter nationally. If you have several years of experience, that is a fact worth raising in a pay review.
  • Use local data, not national. State and metro medians above can be far from the national $65,510. Quote the figure for your area.
  • Compare industries. If another sector pays your occupation more, that is useful leverage, or a sign it may be worth moving.
  • Count the whole package. These figures exclude overtime and benefits, so compare total compensation when weighing an offer.

One more data point: the metro area where heavy equipment mechanics are most concentrated is Anniston-Oxford, AL, with a location quotient of 10.21 and 510 jobs at a median of $61,480. A location quotient above 1 means the job is a bigger share of local employment than it is nationally, which usually means more employers competing for experienced workers.
