How Much Do Mechanical Engineers Make? 2025 Pay by Percentile, State, City and Industry
Key takeaways

  • The median annual wage for mechanical engineers was $104,110 in May 2025 ($50.05 an hour), compared with $50,980 for all U.S. occupations.
  • The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $73,990; the top 10% earned more than $164,340.
  • BLS projects employment to change by 11.2% from 2025 to 2035, with about 17.8 thousand openings a year.

About 296,810 people worked as mechanical engineers in the United States in May 2025, according to the federal government’s BLS OEWS national data, May 2025. Here is what they earn, from entry level to the top of the field, and where the pay is highest. Projections and training requirements come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Mechanical Engineers and BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35.

The full pay range

Percentile Hourly Annual
10th (entry level / lowest paid) $35.57 $73,990
25th $40.45 $84,130
50th (median) $50.05 $104,110
75th $63.75 $132,590
90th (most experienced / best paid) $79.01 $164,340
Mean (average) $54.62 $113,610

A percentile wage means that share of workers earn less. For example, 25% of mechanical engineers earned less than $84,130. BLS wage estimates do not include overtime, tips or most bonuses.

States where mechanical engineers earn the most

Highest state medians in the May 2025 survey (state data):

State Median annual wage Employment
New Mexico $157,710 2,710
District of Columbia $133,300 510
California $130,900 30,530
Delaware $125,130 610
Colorado $124,430 7,190

At the other end, the lowest state medians were in Arkansas ($80,180), Kansas ($86,260), North Dakota ($86,330). Lower-paying states often have lower living costs, so compare offers with local prices in mind.

Top-paying metro areas

Metro areas with at least 300 jobs in this occupation, ranked by median wage (metro data):

Metro area Median annual wage Employment
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA $168,030 5,540

Baton Rouge, LA $135,530 540
Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC $128,740 980
Peoria, IL $128,710 2,120

Which industries pay mechanical engineers the most

Median wage by industry sector, for sectors with at least 1,000 jobs in the occupation (industry data):

Industry sector Median annual wage Employment
Information $175,610 1,130
Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction $138,030 1,420
Utilities $135,150 1,870
Management of Companies and Enterprises $128,390 11,950

How to get into the field

  • Typical entry education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Work experience in a related occupation: nan.
  • Typical on-the-job training: nan.

These are the typical requirements BLS assigns to the occupation in its BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35 tables; employers and state licensing boards may require more. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Mechanical Engineers explains licensing and certification in detail.

Using these numbers to ask for a raise

  • Find your band. If you earn less than $84,130, you are in the bottom quarter nationally. If you have several years of experience, that is a fact worth raising in a pay review.
  • Use local data, not national. State and metro medians above can be far from the national $104,110. Quote the figure for your area.
  • Compare industries. If another sector pays your occupation more, that is useful leverage, or a sign it may be worth moving.
  • Count the whole package. These figures exclude overtime and benefits, so compare total compensation when weighing an offer.

One more data point: the metro area where mechanical engineers are most concentrated is Columbus, IN, with a location quotient of 10.52 and 1,000 jobs at a median of $127,700. A location quotient above 1 means the job is a bigger share of local employment than it is nationally, which usually means more employers competing for experienced workers.
