Dental Career Pay Ladder: Dental Assistant vs. Hygienist vs. Dentist

Dental offices have three main clinical roles, and the pay gap between them is one of the widest in health care relative to training time. If you are a dental assistant thinking about hygiene school, or comparing hygiene to dental school, the latest federal numbers make the trade-offs clear.
The pay ladder at a glance
| Occupation | U.S. jobs | 10th pct. | Median | 90th pct. | Typical entry education | Projected growth 2025–35 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental assistant | 387,790 | $37,130 | $48,070 | $62,250 | Postsecondary nondegree award | +7.4% |
| Dental hygienist | 222,740 | $74,880 | $98,100 | $126,050 | Associate's degree | +8.0% |
| Dentist (general) | 124,390 | $86,250 | $170,950 | $319,630 | Doctoral or professional degree | +5.7% |
Wages are May 2025 estimates from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025; growth and education from BLS Employment Projections, 2025–35. The 10th and 90th percentiles show the range from entry-level or lower-paying employers to the most experienced or best-paid workers. For comparison, the median for all U.S. occupations was $50,980.
Dental assistant to hygienist
Dental assistants earn a median of $48,070. Dental hygienists earn $98,100, a gap of $50,030, or about 104% more. The BLS Handbook says hygienists typically need an associate’s degree in dental hygiene, that programs usually take about three years, and that all states require a license.
Hygienist to dentist
General dentists earn a median of $170,950. Dentists need a DDS or DMD from an accredited dental school and a state license; most programs require a bachelor’s degree first. That is roughly eight years of school after high school, and many dentists also take on practice-ownership costs, so the gap with hygienists is not pure take-home pay.
Growth outlook
BLS projects dental assistants to grow 7.4%, hygienists 8.0% and general dentists 5.7% from 2025 to 2035. Hygienist openings average about 15,000 a year.
Where dental hygienists earn the most
State medians for dental hygienists vary widely. The five highest-paying states in the May 2025 survey:
| State | Median annual wage | Employment |
|---|---|---|
| District of Columbia | $137,220 | 320 |
| Alaska | $132,690 | 790 |
| Washington | $131,160 | 6,330 |
| California | $124,930 | 24,500 |
| Oregon | $122,080 | 3,600 |
How to raise your pay in a dental office
- Expanded-function credentials. Many states allow assistants with extra training to do more procedures; offices often pay more for them.
- Production-based pay. Some hygienist jobs pay a percentage of production. Get the formula in writing and compare it with the hourly median for your state.

For dental assistants weighing expanded functions: requirements are set state by state, and the Dental Assisting National Board keeps a state-by-state lookup of what assistants can do and which credentials are required. It's a good first stop before paying for a course: Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).
