I am a full time college student and I work at an insurance agency about 34 hours each week. I have many concerns of fairness. Though I work 34 hours each week I am considered "part-time." I do not get paid holidays or any benefits (not that I need them as I am covered on my parents plan) but stil…

I am given the same responsibilities as others even though I work less hours and I am expected to do the same work as everyone else. This would be fine, but everyone else is being paid nearly double what I am receiving in my meager hourly wage.

There are many benefits to my job: They are very flexible with my hours and school schedules, It will look great on my resume, and I am gaining knowledge and experience.

My main concern is that I feel as if I am treated unfairly since I am the youngest in the office. Each person I work with has Children around my age. Even though I am not the last person hired, I am given the "grunt work". Filing, cleaning the bathroom, Dusting, Dishes (yes- my co-workers dishes), Watering the plants, vacuming, garbage, scanning, etc.
We have 2 offices, I only work at one, but am responsible for these tasks at both (I am cleaning someone elses office, dishes, messes, etc).

First, with having all of these responsibilities on top of everything else, I do not have time to complete my other tasks. Then I am accused of poor prioritizing and time management when in honesty I am working constantly trying to complete my tasks and even staying late to try to complete them (I don't usually adjust my time sheet for this – - Maybe I should). We are short handed but still, I do not think it is fair that I am being paid less to do the same work (plus more) in less time.

Is it time to start Job Hunting??

They may be able to boss their kids around but I don't think it is fair to go by age, these tasks should be based on who has the most seniority.

Also, I asked for a pay raise and was told that the bonus (for any increases in premium or sales) is my chance to earn more. But how can I try to sell things when I am busy scrubbing the toilet and cleaning up my co-workers lunch mess, and taking out their garbage?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I get paid hourly. (I also get 10% of any upsell in coverage to an existing policy and 5% of any new policy that I write.) It is considered bonus rather than commission.

The issue that I have comparing my salary to others is that they are older and have more work experience. I am assuming that this is the difference between our pay rates.

Also, I asked for a review about a month ago, and without even asking for a raise it was made very clear that our bonus is our opportunity to make more money.

and when the grunt work doesnt get done, things start falling through the cracks ((not so much the cleaning but other activities that I am responsible for are not getting done and we are losing renention and client satisfaction))

Is it possible to be paid salary based on 34 hours each week? and how do I approach my boss about being considered "full time"? Frankly I think he is just cheap.

Ya that is a tough call, i would like ChampagneN says, kinda feel out the facts better and go from there. good luck, right now many employers are under the impressesion that because the economy is so bad you should feel lucky to have a job. So raises are not the first thing on every ones mind.

I think what you should do is just dedicate one day to making sales. Don't do any cleaning or grunt work unless you have down time! I'm sure that most of this work is meant to keep you busy and not to punish you.
Are you paid hourly or commission or both? This might explain why others are making more than you. If it is just hourly, however, you should ask your coworkers how long it took them to make the amount of money they do now and if they feel it is worth it for you to wait that long.
If you work more than 32 hours, you are considered a full time employee and should be paid like one. This is also another issue that needs to be brought up to your boss.
If you bring these issues up and nothing gets changed, then I'd say it's time to start job hunting again. Good luck!

you are a full time student and have flexible hours, this is a plus, most places for part time want scheduled hours so that can fill in the rest of the schedule to have all the bases covered. You should have asked what "are my duties or responsibilities" when you were interviewed for the position. You might consider looking very quietly for another position or have a little chit-chat with the boss. Places I have worked had a rotating schedule for the housekeeping duties and yes the store mangers were also on the schedule. The store manger was the person who made out the schedule.
